Fall Cookies

Have you ever started out with one thing in mind and went in a completely different direction when it was all said and done?

That's how my day went today.

I had planned on making Fall cookies with my almost-three-year-old for her sisters and their volleyball teammates and then posting the how-to's of the recipe, but I was overtaken with mom-moments.

We worked together measuring, stirring and mixing, and each time I looked through the lens at her little hands, I melted.

This is how it went....

Fall cookies with Reese's Pieces!

I started out wanting to make chocolate chip cookies for the team but when Sophie spotted the Reese's Pieces peanut butter candies, things quickly changed.

So out with chocolate and in with the peanut butter!

I let her do everything, well not everything, but pretty close.  I think it's great for learning; she will probably be able to cook at full meal by the time she's 5!

She loves to stand on her bench-stool right next to me as I cook; I love it.

In went the flour.  This was one of her favorite parts, she just couldn't resist putting her hands in the bowl and stirring it around.

"It's soft mommy, me like it," she said with a big smile on her face.

I wasn't planning on cutting the butter into a gillion pieces, but when she saw me getting the butter knife out to slice and soften the butter, she ran to the drawer and got her 'big-girl' knife.

"Me cut the butter with mine knife mommy!"

This is when I first noticed her cute little hands and I began to melt, like the butter!

15 pieces later we were ready to soften the butter in the microwave.

She is so detailed, wonder where she gets that from?

Time for the sugar.

While she learned how to pack brown-sugar, I watched her little hands working so hard to get the sugar packed down just right.

Looking through the lens, watching those little hands, gave me a knot in my throat knowing someday soon they won't be little anymore.

She carefully poured the brown sugar into the bowl and I savored the moment hoping I can remember this day forever.

This was another moment I had to turn my head and take a deep breath, as I snapped each picture, my heart melted further.

Those little hands.

Steadily, she poured the vanilla into the bowl with the eggs.

Keeping it easy for her to understand what we were doing, we placed all of the ingredients into separate bowls before going into the mixer.

Then the real fun began...for her.

"This is like mine Play-Doh Mommy!"

I started a row of cookies for her to see how to do, and then let her have at it.

[The 'face' in the cookie ball above was not planned, just happened.]

She dug right in with happiness beaming from her face.

 I melted again.

Those hands!

 "Look Mommy, me did it!"

She made her cookies and laid them out on the cookie sheet.

Back in the day, with my first two girls, I would have re-made the balls to make perfectly sized formations, but I have learned with the third kid, it just doesn't matter.

Let them have fun and enjoy every single second you have with them, they grow up so fast and don't want to make cookies with you anymore!

Sophie's creation, a beautiful row of cookies, double-decker and all!

Hers and mine, I love it!

We had so much fun together.

I'm still clearing the knot out of my throat thinking back on her smiles, playing in the mix and those little hands.

I'm not posting a recipe, it's a basic cookie recipe from my trusty Betty Crocker cookbook and we added the Reese's Pieces.

Enjoy the pictures and our fun day together!

I couldn't settle on one picture of her enjoying her cookie...
so you get three!

 Still making me melt!

No words for this one!

So precious! My little boy also loves to cook and bake with us. He is constantly pulling a chair up to the counter and asking to help. He's not too keen on breaking eggs though, he thought they were yucky.
